MEET YOUR THERAPISTs
JEAN RICKS-AYER, PLPC (She/They)
Under the supervision of Susan Hall, MO LPC 002703
In person or virtual sessions: $150/hour or $225/hour and a half
Eco sessions: Starting at $150/hour
Jean is a queer-identifying, provisionally licensed professional counselor, who believes in equitable human rights for all. She holds strongly, that we are all so much more than our brain, and that an integrative, holistic, and embodied approach is the pathway to self-awareness, understanding, growth, and healing. Anchoring in curiosity and Internal Family Systems (IFS) also known as “parts work”, Jean will help you come to understand the many parts of you, that make you, you: How these parts work in harmony and opposition, and ultimately, how these parts came to be as means of finding clarity, confidence, and courage. Ultimately, Jean’s hope, is to help you tap into your truest Self, through curiosity, open-mindedness, and deep thoughtfulness.
In session, you’ll find that Jean is lovingly direct, warm, real, playful, and deeply compassionate. With a neurodivergent brain, high sensitivity, and strong intuition, you’ll find both comfort in her authenticity, and challenge in her passion for deep, expansive work. While session will usually include some verbal processing, it may also include quiet somatic work, deep breathing, visualization, art, or playing. In addition to traditional office therapy, Jean is excited to offer eco-sessions, where individuals can engage their mind, body, and senses in fuller, more connected way.
Jean may be a great fit for you if you are open to new possibilities, deep thinking, and even deeper feeling. If you are willing to get uncomfortable, and really interested in knowing, understanding, and living within your deepest integrity, buckle-up, settle in, and enjoy the ride.
GREG TISSI, PLPC (He/Him)
Under the supervision of Susan Hall, MO LPC 002703
Virtual Sessions: $150/hour
Eco Sessions: Starting at $150/hour
Greg is a provisionally licensed professional counselor and an advocate for queer, trans, and Black lives, and supporter of equity and human rights for all.
In a safe and supportive atmosphere, Greg offers a highly personalized, integrative approach, tailored to the individual needs of each client. He works collaboratively with clients to achieve a deeper understanding of self, help them improve relationships, develop effective coping strategies, change negative patterns and take action. Greg believes strongly that cognitive and behavioral changes alone do not promote true, long lasting change. Rather, that a holistic approach including modalities such as play therapy, somatic experiencing, mindfulness, and nature therapy, in conjunction with psychoeducation, talk therapy, and behavioral approaches foster insight, growth, and change. Greg will work with you to awaken to your own healing powers, within safe space to explore, and with tools to help you track your experience and build on your strengths. He will help you work with the ways you hold past hurt, grief, or trauma, and support your natural ability to heal, connect, focus, and increase your capacity for joy.
In session, you’ll find that Greg is really interested in hearing, understanding, and connecting. He is engaged, thoughtful, and curious, often igniting deep reflection, processing, and newfound perspective. In addition to talking, you may find yourself in somatic meditation with Greg, drawing, or engaging in deep, life giving breathwork. You can expect sacred space held just for you, room to breathe, and authentic, non-judgmental support.
Greg may be a good fit for you if you’re ready to get off the exhausting treadmill, move with intention, and discover the trust and respect you have envisioned for yourself.
FAQS

The term "Hope Merchant" comes from a trauma informed therapeutic modality called Internal Family Systems or IFS for short. Within IFS and at Hope Merchant Counseling, a big focus is offering hope for growth, possibility, change, and healing. The therapists and counselors at HMC strive to offer that to every client no matter the approach. We believe, that if you're sitting across from one of us, you want something different, better or maybe even an elevated experience. We're here to give you that.
-
That is a fair and great question, AND, it just depends. What you can always expect is sacred space held just for you, room to breathe, and an authentic, non-judgmental support. You can expect that your therapist has been carefully interviewed and vetted for the ability to connect authentically, awareness of trauma and trauma informed approaches, and the ability to flex and bend in an integrative and eclectic way which honors your needs.
-
Because queer, trans, and people of color are oppressed and marginalized and because these minorities are not treated fairly or equitably. It is important that queer, trans, and people of color know where their safe spaces and resources are.

In short, insurance is a hassle and doesn't truly honor your health and wellness. There is a whole bunch more about this on our "Services + Fees" page if you'd like to read on. If you'd like a superbill for reimbursement from your insurance provider we can make that happen! Please know reimbursement is never guaranteed.

With exception of two cancellations per year, we have a “no cancellation” policy. If you must cancel, you may reschedule for another time that works better for you, within your therapist's availability. Because we hold space just for you, you will be charged for the missed session. We will not however, charge you for your makeup session. This allows us to offer consistency and flexibility, while holding smaller caseloads in order to offer you our most focused and engaged selvesh, preserve our own emotional and mental wellbeing, and offer the holistic, sacred space we promise to hold for you. Good therapy is sometimes hard therapy, which requires a big commitment from you and a big commitment from your therapist beyond the hour that you're working with them. We're asking for a lot from you--we promise to give a lot back. Any therapist time off will be communicated well in advance (except in the case of emergency) in which case you will not be charged.

This is such a B I G answer, and there are so many different ways to answer. Trauma informed, through the lens of Hope Merchant Counseling means an integrative, comprehensive, and holistic approach which acknowledges your lived experiences while respecting your window of tolerance and safety. The widespread impact of your experiences will be explored to reduce guilt and shame, without inflicting fear or retraumatization.

First, read the bit about "bandaid therapy" on our home page versus what we do here at HMC. Also, the therapists at HMC have a true passion for helping people achieve their goals, and have the time and capacity to engage intentionally. We offer an integrative approach because we care about all parts of you, and have time and space for emotional health and wellness, training, consultation, research, and thoughtfulness. With all of this, we can do focused, intentional, and meaningful work.

Though we hope you'll talk openly about how cool it is to have a therapist, and to do the hard things with support, the answer to your question is, "Totally!". Your privacy, confidentiality, and sense of safety is of utmost importance to us and something we are ethically bound to. It is important to note however, that in the case of child or elder abuse, intent of homicide, or intent of suicide, we are mandated reporters. This means that in these situations, we are required by law to report to the local authorities. In these cases, you will be informed and involved.
